Hogan MVPI practice (Motives, Values, Preferences)

The MVPI is not about capability or risk. It asks what you actually want from work — and therefore which cultures you will thrive in and which will quietly wear you down.

Free to start. Every item is generated fresh, marked with a full worked solution, and ranked on a 1–9 stanine band that recalibrates as more candidates practise.

What it measures

What Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory is actually testing

The MVPI covers ten motives — recognition, power, hedonism, altruistic, affiliation, tradition, security, commerce, aesthetics and science. Together they describe the environment you will seek out and the one you will build if given the chance, which is why it is used for culture fit and team composition rather than pass/fail screening.

The format

How the real assessment runs

Format
Short statements answered agree, uncertain or disagree. Deliberately simple; the interpretation is where the depth is.
Scoring
Ten percentile scores. There is no good or bad profile — only fit and misfit with a given environment.
Use
Culture fit, team building, leadership development, and understanding why a strong performer disengaged.
Pairing
Typically administered with the HPI and HDS as the third part of the Hogan suite.

Where marks are lost

What candidates get wrong

Answering as the person the job advert describes. The MVPI is the one inventory where distorting your answers is self-defeating: a fabricated profile gets you into an environment built for someone else's motives. Use the practice to find out what your profile actually is, then decide whether the role matches it.

Motives, Values, Preferences Inventoryfrequently asked questions

What is the Hogan MVPI?

The Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory measures what someone wants from work across ten scales: recognition, power, hedonism, altruistic, affiliation, tradition, security, commerce, aesthetics and science. It is used for culture fit and team composition rather than as a screening filter.

Is there a good or bad MVPI profile?

No. There is only fit and misfit with a given environment. A high commerce and power profile thrives in a place that would exhaust someone whose top motives are altruistic and aesthetics, and the reverse holds equally.

Should I answer the MVPI strategically?

It is the inventory where distortion is most self-defeating. Answering as the person the job advert describes can land you in an environment built for someone else's motives — which is the situation the MVPI exists to prevent on both sides.
