The HBRI measures business problem-solving in two directions. Tactical reasoning is data handling — series, margins, allocation of a constrained resource. Strategic reasoning is argument evaluation — whether a conclusion follows, and whether a trend supports the claim being made about it. The report is most interesting where the two disagree.

On strategic items, accepting a conclusion because it is sensible. HBRI syllogism items are built so the plausible conclusion and the valid conclusion come apart — the statement that sounds like good business judgement is frequently the one that does not follow from the premises given.

No. It is a reasoning inventory set in business situations, reported as a profile across two streams rather than a single general-ability figure. Hogan positions it alongside the HPI and HDS in leadership assessment rather than as a screening cut-off.
Work both streams separately. The quantitative items reward setting the calculation up correctly rather than computing fast; the qualitative items reward refusing conclusions that sound like good business judgement but do not follow from the premises given. Knowing which of the two is your weaker stream is most of the value.
There is no universal cut-off — results are read as percentiles against a comparison group and interpreted alongside the rest of the Hogan suite. A lopsided profile, strong in one stream and weak in the other, is often more informative to the assessor than the overall figure.
