Where marks are lost
Reversing a percentage by subtracting it. A price that rose 20% does not come back with a 20% cut, and a figure that is 80% of another is not 120% the other way. The second most common slip is a factor of ten in unit conversion — cm² to m² is ten thousand, not a hundred.

Applied numeracy tests practical everyday arithmetic at speed: unit conversion, proportional scaling (rule of three), percentages, and simple areas. It is grouped into short topic sections and filters on carelessness rather than mathematical ability.
Divide, do not subtract. A price that rose 20% returns to its original by dividing by 1.2, which is a cut of about 16.7%, not 20%. Reverse-percentage items are among the most reliably failed on this module, so this practice includes them deliberately.
Administrations vary and many provide an on-screen calculator. The numbers are chosen to be clean either way — if your arithmetic is turning ugly, the setup is usually wrong rather than the sum being hard.
